The Ocular Surface Clinic

At the Ocular Surface Clinic, we will perform Ocular Surface imaging to deal with the issues affecting the front surface of the eye.

Ocular surface problems can produce symptoms such as:

• Blurred vision
• Irritation
• Dry eyes
• Burning
• Watering or Tearing
• Trouble wearing contact lenses
• General discomfort

When problems such as these occur and do not get properly treated it is difficult for a patient to get an accurate prescription for glasses or contact lenses, to be able to wear contact lenses successfully, or to see clearly without continual discomfort and pain. There are many eye conditions that have overlapping symptoms, any and all of which may be underlying problems. It is difficult to treat them successfully without this further data which helps your doctor determine the exact cause of your condition and prescribe the most accurate treatment.

Here are the components of The Ocular Surface Clinic:

• Assessment of tear quality and quantity
• Assessment of the quality of blinking: rate and completeness of the blink
• Measurement of eye gland production of healthy tear film
• Calculation of the ratio of oil and water production in your tear film
• External Eye Examination that includes the above test data for correct diagnosis and treatment of underlying disease, many of which produce ocular surface problems. Recommended therapies may include an oral product to increase tear film productions and/or and in-office therapy directed at restoring natural oil gland functions.

Treatments can range from at home over the counter therapies to an in office 12 minute Ocular Surface Therapy. Ocular Surface Therapy uses heat and gentle pressure to unblock obstructed glands. The goal of the therapy is the help the body resume the natural flow of oils and prevent any ocular surface problems from progressing. Similar to an oil change in a car, we need to clean the oils in our glands so that new healthy oils will flow.

There is no pain or discomfort during Ocular Surface Therapy. In fact most patients report it being a pleasant, soothing experience. The therapy lasts for twelve minutes and one may resume normal activity right after the treatment is over. Some patients get symptomatic relief immediately after the therapy and others take up to three months before symptoms abate.

Treatment Frequency
